Few buildings reflect public and academic cultures more than arts and civic projects. As highly visible elements of our built environment, such buildings require an elevated level of formal and material symbolism. They must physically embody their content reflecting ideas of permanence and grandeur. Arts and civic buildings offer exciting opportunities to explore the visual and physical properties of new materials and to explore new ways of shaping and giving character to space. At the same time, these often public buildings must reflect the varied communities that they serve. Participation and coordination of multiple stakeholders is critical. The design process must involve skillful management of the complex requirements of different user groups and a commitment to realizing solutions that successfully accommodate a range of preferences and requirements.
