Whitmore Hall Chancellor Suite Renovation

University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Location: Amherst, MA

Total GSF: 5,200 GSF Renovation

Completed: 2023

This renovation project improves an existing convoluted arrangement of adjoining administrative departments into a series of cohesive suites. These include the Office of the Chancellor, University Provost, and Office of Equity and Inclusion. The new layout provides each department a clearly defined space with rationalized circulation routes and an analogous design aesthetic tailored to each department’s specific needs.

Each suite received all new finishes, including new wood panel surrounds at the main entries to match new millwork reception desks. Wood paneling continues into the reception areas and culminates at a wood slat ceiling in a new conference room.

A primary focus of the project is to promote visual transparency of space and perceived transparency of the Administration. A series of new interior storefront openings allow views from the building’s main internal corridor through the suites and out onto the exterior landscape, allowing building occupants to catch a glimpse of the respective departmental happenings.

In addition, existing toilet rooms were modernized and enlarged to be code compliant and a new lactation room was added for all building users.
