NU2019 Plan
Norwich University
Location: Northfield, VT
Total GSF: 130 Acres
The NU2019 Plan establishes a strategy for future campus growth that will accommodate physical space needs and that will clearly express the University’s institutional ideals and educational mission. From its inception, the University has promoted a vision of students fully engaged with their natural surroundings. The NU2019 Plan respects and reflects this vision, giving equal weight to buildings and grounds. The NU2019 Plan also addresses both long-term planning and short-term maintenance to ensure a consistently strong campus character.
At the master plan level, sustainable thinking starts with an awareness of current and future campus requirements. Existing spaces may offer opportunities for more efficient or new programming, and should factor into any discussion of new construction. For the Norwich NU2019 Plan this means consolidating parking into a structure and replacing surface parking with green space. Other sustainable strategies include orienting buildings to maximize winter solar gain; establishing recycling and composting programs; and using local materials.
