The Arts Campus is a new home for the Art Institute of Boston (Now Lesley College of the Arts), a college of Lesley University. The design proposes to introduce a public gallery, library, and senior studios into a renovated and monumental church that currently occupies a portion of the site, and to construct an addition to house studios, classrooms and offices. An auditorium links the church to the addition, and functions as a light well to bring daylight and views into adjacent studios and gallery space.
A central light well organizes the Arts Campus scheme, directing natural light to interior spaces and accommodating a series of stairs and ramps to provide vertical public circulation. Daylighting is especially appropriate in this context because it provides ideal conditions for making and viewing art. Another sustainable aspect of the scheme is the proposed reuse of an existing structure.
